The Cincinnati Bearcats battle the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Saturday in AAC college football action from Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati.

Tulsa enters this game at 6-1 overall. The Hurricane are on a six-game winning streak, and have taken out SMU, Tulane and Navy in their last three outings. As for Cincinnati, they’re 8-0 this year. The Bearcats have beaten Memphis, Houston, East Carolina and UCF in their last four games. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.

Tulsa opened the year with a tough matchup against Oklahoma State, but hung in there on a 16-7 loss. Since then it’s been six straight wins for the Golden Hurricane in a great season. Those victories came 34-26 over UCF, 42-13 over South Florida, 34-30 over East Carolina, 28-24 over SMU, 30-24 (OT) against Tulane and 19-6 over Navy.

In the win over the Midshipmen, Tulsa quarterback Zach Smith bagged 168 yards and a score on 10-of-25 passing. Corey Taylor led the rush with 19 carries for 69 yards, and Josh Johnson had 76 yards and a score on three catches.

Over on the Cincinnati side, they’re rolling along undefeated this season, but did have a close scare in their last game. The Bearcats’ wins have come over Austin Peay, Army, South Florida, SMU, Memphis, Houston, East Carolina and UCF The Knights game was tight, though: a 36-33 escape for Cincinnati.

In the win over the Knights, Bearcats quarterback Desmond Ridder posted 338 yards and two scores on 21-of-32 passing while also rushing for 57 yards and two scores. Josh Whyle led the receivers on 81 yards and a TD, and Gerrid Doaks had 28 carries for 97 yards.

The Hurricane are 5-0 ATS in their last five games in December and 4-1 ATS in their last five on turf. Tulsa is 7-1 ATS in their last eight overall and 6-1 ATS in their last seven conference games.

Meanwhile, the Bearcats are 5-1 ATS versus a team with a winning record and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. Cincinnati is 4-1 ATS in their last five conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Cincinnati here. This is bound to be a close game, though. Tulsa dominated Navy in total yards (296-153) but had trouble breaking away in their last game, a closer-than-it-looked 19-6 win. The offense never really got in a scoring rhythm, which was pretty uncharacteristic for a team that normally puts up points with ease. As for Cincinnati, they’ve been consistent on the scoreboard for the most part, but the close game against the Knights is cause for concern. Still, I think the Bearcats can get the offense going and manage a cover here. Should be a fun one to watch.

Tulsa at Cincinnati: Three things to know

Tulsa fell 16-7 at Oklahoma State in its regular-season opener Sept. 19, and many were asking what’s wrong with the Cowboys. Instead, people should have been asking what’s right with the Golden Hurricane. They have rattled off six straight wins to get to Cincinnati, and they’re 6-1 ATS in seven games this season. The Golden Hurricane are sufficient on offense, posting 411.3 total yards per game to rank 54th in the country, with 27.7 points per game to rank 70th. Defensively is where they’re strongest, limiting the opposition to 183.4 passing yards per game (15th in the nation), 328.4 total yards per game (20th) and 19.9 PPG (21st).Cincinnati has been off since Nov. 21, a narrow 36-33 win at UCF. It was a rare non-cover for the Bearcats, as they are 5-3 ATS overall this season. Cincinnati has scored 36 or more points in each of its past five outings. The Bearcats are a strong defensive team, too, yielding just 308.1 total yards per game (9th), 195.6 passing yards (23rd), 112.5 rushing yards (17th) and 15.0 PPG (5th).

Money line (ML)

Cincinnati (-715) is a heavy favorite, and that’s not a good way to spend your money. Yes, it’s at home, but Tulsa has had a knack of finding ways to win, even when it looks like it shouldn’t. Look to the spread instead.

AVOID.

Tulsa Cincinnati Pick

Against the spread (ATS)

TULSA +14.5 (-110) is the best play on the board in this AAC title game. The Golden Hurricane have cashed in three straight, and six of the past seven, including all four of its games on the road. It has been a theme for the Golden Hurricane over the years, as they’re 26-10 ATS in the past 36 on the road, and 20-7 ATS in the past 27 against winning teams.

This will be a bit of a defensive battle, and the ‘Cane will easily hang within two scores.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 45.5 (-110) is a good play in this title game, as both of these teams bring a lot of heat on defense. They have some talent on the offensive side of the ball, but the defenses will reign supreme.

And hey, isn’t it true? Defense wins championships.
