The game starts when you make an ante and/or a PairPlus bet. You and the dealer each get three cards. You get to look at your cards, but the dealer’s cards are dealt face down and stay face down.
The players and the dealer all get three cards, face down. The players all look at their hands and either fold by giving their cards back and losing their ante bet, or play by placing a bet, equal to the ante, in the 'play' spot on the layout. Note that even if the player folds, pair plus wagers are still paid on any pair or better. Basic 3 Card Poker Tips Keep in mind you can only see your hand prior to raising your ante or folding. If you’d like to play by the odds (and we suggest you do), remember this hand: Queen-six-four. If your hand’s high card is a Jack or lower, you should fold. Player and dealer each receive 3 cards and the player makes a bet without seeing the cards. It’s actually 2 games in one where you can bet on the ante which plays your 3 cards against the dealers, or on pair plus which wins or loses irrelevant of the dealers cards, or on both. What wins in 3 card poker? The first step to devising any successful 3 Card Poker strategy is to familiarize yourself with the Pair Plus odds. There are 22,100 winning hands, or around 25.6% of the total possible combinations. In 3 Card Poker you win if you successfully produce a pair, flush, straight, three of a kind or straight flush. As the name suggests, three card poker is played with three cards. A hand begins with the player placing an ante in the designated box and receiving three cards. Based on the hand they’re dealt, the player makes one of two options: Play – continuing in a hand by matching their ante bet.
If you made an ante bet, you have the option to fold or raise. If you fold, you lose your ante bet. If you raise, then you’re making a “play” bet, which means you must put up another bet the samesize as your ante.
At this point, the dealer reveals his cards. To qualify, the dealer needs a queen or better. If the dealer does NOT qualify, you get even money on your ante bet, but the play bet is considered apush. (You get that bet back with no winnings. It’s like a tie score.)
If the dealer DOES qualify, then you and the dealer compare hands. The better hand wins both the ante and the play bets. The bets pay off at even money. In the event of a tie, the action isconsidered a push.
Also, if you have a straight or higher, you get a bonus payout on the ante bet, even if the dealer beats your hand.
The PairPlus bet, on the other hand, pays off based on how well your hand ranks. It has nothing to do with comparing your hand with the dealer’s.
For purposes of Three Card Poker, here are the poker hand rankings, from best to worst.
- Straight flush
- Three of a kind
- Straight
- Flush
- Pair
- Ace high (or lower)
The ante bonus and the PairPlus bet payouts are based on a pay table, in the same way that a slot machine or video poker game works. These payouts vary from casino to casino.
Here’s an example ante bonus pay table.
Hand | Payout |
---|---|
Straight flush | 3 |
Three of a kind | 2 |
Straight | 1 |
These payouts can vary widely, though—you might find a casino that pays 10 to 1 on a straight flush. Generally, the higher the payouts are, the lower the house edge is. One hand doesn’t vary, though—the payoff for a straight is always even money.

The PairPlus pay table usually looks like this.
Hand | Payout |
---|---|
Straight flush | 40 |
Three of a kind | 30 |
Straight | 6 |
Flush | 3 |
Pair | 1 |
The house edge for this bet is over 7%, by the way, so I don’t recommend ever making this bet. Some casinos, though, offer a payout for a “mini royal flush.” A mini royal flush is an A-K-Q, allof the same suit.

Depending on the specific pay table for that variation, the house edge might drop to as little as 2%-4%.
Three Card Poker Tips And Tricks To Play
Three Card Poker is a simple, yet fun game that can be found in just about any online casino. To understand the game, all you need to know is that your 3 card hand must beat the dealers. That’s the basics of it and if you follow a few straightforward tips, you can start to maximize your winnings.
When you boil it down Three Card Poker is all about knowing when to fold and when to complete your bet. This article will help you to better understand the strategy involved to know when to hold em, or when to fold em.
1. Pair Plus Bet
The pair plus bet is a side that can be played that wagers on whether or not you will hit a pair or better. The bet pays odds according to how strong your hand is.
The basic strategy to follow on the pair plus bet is: Not to play it! The house edge is considerably high in most cases, it will be wiser to stick to the standard ante and raise bets. Although the high pay outs for making the top hand can be luring, don’t fall victim to the trap and stay away from this bet.
2. Queen or Better
This wonderful basic strategy in three card poker is very easy to follow and it can truly make a positive difference to your bankroll. If you have Queen/6/4 or better, you should immediately raise your bet.
Statistically speaking, it is proven that you will win more often by using this strategy.
3. Stick to the plan
The above strategy is very easy and simple to understand, however, many players feel the need to stray from the plan and go on a feeling or previous hands. The game will not tell you what will happen next based on what happened previously. It’s like flipping a coin, it will be completely random and the last flip has no effect on the outcome of the next flip.
Bottom line is: stick to the strategy and use it properly.
4. Mimic the dealer
I thought I’d mention this strategy since it’s a popular and players feel that if it works for the dealer, it should work for them.
Three Card Poker Tips And Tricks For Beginners
If you follow the rules of which hands to fold or raise based on the dealers rules, you will do no more than break even at best. Most likely lose. You are basically evening the field and not taking advantage of the fact that the player has choices the dealer doesn’t.

5. Betting tips
As always, play within your limits and stick with a bet size you are comfortable with. Having a good hand and not enough chips left to make the raise bet is a huge mistake. Know how much have at all times so that you are sure to be able to complete all bets.
